Limited Edition Mug

You may have caught wind that we have new mugs for sale!
We all feel a little bit like this about it...
 We've got a limited supply of these pretty peach and navy mugs so get yours quickly.  The sales of said mugs are hopefully going to cover most of the cost of a bright shiny new bike rack (made by the wonderful guys at Peak Racks) that will take residence in front of the cafe.  We love and adore you sweet bike riders and want a proper spot for you to park your steed.

Many many of you sally loving people contacted me wishing there was a way to purchase them online.  So, I created a lil paypal and I think we're set.  Please allow 3-5 business days prior to shipping.  If you are at all able to come in to purchase A.) it'll be cheaper (no shipping or service fee) and B.) you'll get a free cup of coffee.  So we encourage that but for those of you who aren't able and can't live with out it, here you go.

Guest post by the one and only...

This post is presented by Danielle 'always down' Cleland. 

When most people find out that I'm a full-time cook, their response is usually something along the lines of "Don't you get tired of cooking?". Short answer: No. Long Answer: No, because I love it. As in, I don't fully know how to explain why I love my job and why I don't tire of it. The best way I think I can describe my love for cooking is to tell you what I do when I get home from a fairly exhausting eight hour day of dicing onions, frying eggs, rolling out quiche crust, blending acai and carving turkey breasts. I cook. Usually for people I love.

One thing I love about cooking at home is that I have developed some sort of ritual, perhaps to the likeness of a batter stepping up to the plate (Go Giants).

Towel over shoulder (because this is what my momma taught me), put on Paul Simon pandora (because anywhere Paul, Stevie Nicks and Elton John can hang out together, I want to cook for them), sharpen knife (because doi), have friend open a bottle of wine (because this is what Pink meant by 'get the party started').

Today's menu: Homemade ricotta gnocchi with a brown butter, sage, fresh corn and shitake mushroom sauce. Gnocchi: Super easy pasta to make from scratch, looks fancy, incredibly fun to say.

I think most people would agree that the best part of this whole process would have to be the sitting down and sharing a meal with friends. I take after my mom in that when I first sit down at the table, I love to just sit and listen to the clanking of dishes, the omnomnoms, the 'pass the ___' etc. Some times at the cafe I like to just peak out the order window and watch people eating (creeeeeppppp). It's not just that I love people enjoying the food I make (although I'm quite sure there's some pride mixed in there), but I think it's that I really enjoy being part of a shared experience. Blah blah community, blah blah relationships, blah blah connecting. But really, that's what keeps me from getting burnt out on cooking. Et viola, I finally figured out how to answer that question!

The Sea In Between

We're still beaming from the fun that was had on Friday at The Sea In Between documentary and concert with Josh Garrels and Mason Jar Music.  It turned out exactly as we pictured: dusty, comfy, perfect weather, hay bales, lovely people.  What an incredible honor to be in the presence of such great and graceful musicians. 

The day started with a picnic and potluck by the creek.  

Local musicians, Johnny and Arthur, from Yohanan Music played for us. So very good!

followed by a pie contest judged by the one and only Roxanne Rosensteel(our very own baker), Gabriel and Dana Miossi (owners of the ranch), Dan Knobler of Mason Jar Music, and Josh Garrels.  It was a tough call but the winner was Vanessa Pham with her coconut pie with fresh berries.

The Sexton Sisters serenaded us before we loaded into the barn sitting on hay bales to watch the film.

The concert started right after and everyone sat on quilts and rocks to enjoy the music.  They encored with "I'll Fly Away" with all 400 people in the audience wiggling their butts and clapping along.  

We are so thankful to have had the opportunity to have Mason Jar Music and Josh play in slo.

Thanks for sharing your talents!  To the Moores.  You introduced us to Gabriel and made this all possible.  We were waiting and losing hope that we were going to find the perfect venue.  You led us to the right place.  To Gabriel and Tom, holy cow!  You are so great to work with.  We are trying to make up reasons to get back out to your property.  To Phil, our hero of the day.  Chicken strips are hardly payment enough.  To the Mason Jar crew and Josh, thanks for trusting us and being down to play on a dusty ranch in the middle of nowhere.  We appreciate you so much.

Sally's little brother

Hanker, Hankerton, Hankertot, Bo-Yeee, Baby Boy, Hank the Tank, Frat Boy

It's about time we shared with you the new member of the family.  His name is Hank.
We adopted him from Fresno Bully Rescue after seeing his picture and falling for his sweet brown eyes and Yoda ears.  He is 100% Love Pig.  He burps and farts a lot.  He loves Sally so so much.  And we are smitten!

If you are interested in adopting a bully breed I definitely recommend FBR.  They are an amazing group of people with a heart for these sweet pups that are so misunderstood and mistreated.  They are great at pairing you with the right dog for your family.  We could not be more impressed with how they handled every step.  Check them out and I dare you to not fall in love with at least one of those wet noses.

I love breakfast.  Actually, my love for breakfast and food eaten for breakfast was one of the original reasons we opened Sally Loo's.  We wanted a place to go eat yummy food that was made with good ingredients that we could trust.  And I must confess, when I am about to eat something that I'm excited about I shamelessly take a photo with my phone and share it with my instafriends. 
Gross? Trendy? Cliche? Don't give a rat's ass. 
So needless to say, when I stumbled upon Seth Lowe's photography website the other day, I drooled over his series of breakfasts.

Oh hey, yeah, who's a blog ball dropper.  I am.  Sorry readers.  Are you out there?

It is my pleasure to start up the website again with an announcement!

Josh Garrels is coming back to San Luis Obispo September 7th!

Last year his show sold out really quickly and we had a packed house so this go round we are doing things a little differently.  We're holding the event at La Cuesta Ranch here in town but just far out of town to need to wear comfortable shoes and bring something warm to comfort you in the cool country air. It is a beautiful spot with a big happy barn and lots of room for frolicking.

Here's the breakdown of how the day will play out:

The Gates open at 4pm- at this time you are invited to bring a dish to share and a blanket to sit on for a potluck.  We'll have musicians around serenading us as we get the party started.

Pie Contest! Yup, that's right.  This is a pie baking contest not a pie eating contest ;) If you've got a winning recipe, or heck, just want to try your hand and see if it's well received, then you should definitely enter the contest.  Winners, prizes, and I'm sure actual pie eating will commence at around 5:30pm.  If you'd like to enter, please call 805-434-1013 to sign-up.
